The 9800X3D launched at $479 in November 2024 and in mid-October 2026 it sells for roughly $429–$444 at the major US retailers. The best online offer this month came from Newegg: $429 with a promo code, plus a free MSI 240mm liquid cooler and an AMD game bundle.
The lowest price on record is $399.99, at Micro Center in early December 2025, during last year’s Cyber Week. At the same time the big online stores were around $449–$454, which shows that CPU discounts vary much more from store to store than camera discounts do.
CPU prices have held fairly steady through 2026, while DDR5 memory, SSDs and graphics cards have climbed sharply. Unlike the earlier 7800X3D, the 9800X3D places its extra cache under the CPU cores rather than on top of them. That lets it run at higher clock speeds and makes it unlocked for overclocking.
Buy now or wait for Zen 6?
AMD’s next desktop generation, Zen 6 “Olympic Ridge”, is expected in the first half of 2027 and is planned for the same AM5 socket, according to AMD’s roadmap as reported in August 2026. That means two things for Black Friday buyers:
- There is no successor to wait for this holiday season. The 9800X3D remains AMD’s main 8-core gaming chip through Black Friday and Cyber Monday 2026.
- An AM5 motherboard bought now has an upgrade path. Check that board makers support new chips through BIOS updates before you buy.

- Gamers building a high-refresh 1440p or 4K rig with a fast GPU, where the 3D V-Cache pays off most.
- AM5 owners on a Ryzen 7000 or non-X3D 9000 chip who want a drop-in gaming upgrade.
- Anyone who wants one CPU that will stay competitive through a GPU upgrade or two.
Look elsewhere
- You mostly render, compile or encode. A 12- or 16-core chip such as the Ryzen 9 9950X3D gives you more cores for the money.
- You’re pairing it with an entry-level GPU at 1080p. A cheaper CPU will deliver nearly the same frame rates.
- You’re on AM4. A full platform change plus 2026 DDR5 prices makes the 5800X3D or 5700X3D a cheaper upgrade if you can find one.

Ryzen 7 9850X3D
